When To Regrip Golf Clubs (And What To Use)

The signs your grips are done, what grips to choose, and how to regrip a full set at home for under $50 in one afternoon.

When To Regrip Golf Clubs (And What To Use)

The Three Signs Your Grips Are Done

(1) The grip feels smooth or shiny in the palm area — new grips are tacky, worn grips are slick. (2) You grip tighter under pressure to avoid slipping. (3) You played more than 40 rounds this season, or bought the clubs more than a year ago with original grips. Any single yes is a regrip. Worn grips cause grip-pressure compensations that produce swing flaws — they are the cheapest swing problem to fix.

Grip Types: What to Know

Cord grips: rubber wrapped with cord fibers — best for humid climates and sweaty hands. More feedback, slightly firmer feel. Rubber/synthetic: the universal choice — tacky in dry conditions, good in mild heat. Midsize vs standard: most golfers should use standard. Midsize reduces hand action through impact — useful for players who hook, but it reduces feel for most. If you are buying grips for the first time, start with standard.

Standard vs Oversize vs Undersize

Standard is correct for most hands. The field test: with the left hand (for right-handers) on the grip, the middle two fingers should barely touch the palm. If they dig in hard — oversize. If there is a gap — undersize. Wrong grip size contributes to tension, inconsistent release, and missed shots right (oversize) or left (undersize).

How to Regrip at Home

Tools needed: double-sided grip tape, grip solvent (or water-based solvent), a rubber vice clamp, and the new grips. Process: (1) remove old grip with a hooked blade — cut down the grip and peel off. (2) Remove old tape. (3) Apply new double-sided tape — single wrap for standard size. (4) pour solvent into new grip, shake to coat inside, pour excess onto tape. (5) slide grip on in one smooth motion. (6) align grip logo. (7) let cure 2-3 hours before hitting. Total time: 8-10 minutes per club.
