How To Re-Grip Golf Clubs At Home (Step by Step)

A step-by-step guide to re-gripping golf clubs at home using grip tape, solvent, and new grips — cheaper and faster than paying the shop.

How To Re-Grip Golf Clubs At Home (Step by Step)

What You Need

Grip tape (double-sided, 2-inch), grip solvent (or mineral spirits), a hook blade or utility knife, a vice or clamp, and your new grips. The whole kit costs about $25 at home versus $5–$10 per club at a shop.

Step 1: Remove The Old Grip

Slide a hook blade under the butt end of the grip and cut from top to bottom. Peel the old grip and tape off. Clean any residue with solvent on a rag.

Step 2: Apply Tape

Wrap double-sided grip tape around the grip end of the shaft, slightly overlapping the butt cap. One strip covers most grips. Fold the top over the butt cap.

Step 3: Apply Solvent

Pour solvent into the new grip, cap the small end with your thumb, and shake to coat the inside. Pour the excess over the tape on the shaft.

Step 4: Slide And Align

Slide the grip onto the shaft quickly while the solvent keeps the tape slick. Align the logo and any alignment rib immediately — you have about 30 seconds before it sets.

Step 5: Let It Cure

Wait 24 hours before playing. The grip will be fully bonded and ready for the range.
