5 Putting Tips That Work on Any Green

Eye Position Over the Ball

Most putting inconsistency starts with eye position. Your eyes should be directly over the ball or slightly inside. A putting mirror is the fastest way to check and fix this.

Read From Behind

Always walk behind the ball and look toward the hole before reading from the low side. The slope reveals itself better when you look up the line from behind.

Control Speed, Not Direction

Most missed putts are a speed problem, not a line problem. Practice lag putting from 20 and 30 feet before worrying about makeable distance.

Use a Pre-Putt Routine

One practice stroke, a look, and then go. A consistent routine removes the decision-making that stalls putting.

Aim at a Small Target

Pick the smallest possible spot on your intended line — a pebble, a discoloration — and putt through it. Small targets produce more committed strokes.
