Golf Gifts That Actually Get Used (And the Ones That Get Re-Gifted)

An honest breakdown of the golf gifts that earn a permanent spot in the bag versus the ones that get left in the car and eventually re-gifted at the office holiday exchange.

Golf Gifts That Actually Get Used (And the Ones That Get Re-Gifted)

The Bag Test

The simplest filter for any golf gift: will it live in the bag permanently? A clip-on towel passes. A themed divot tool passes. A novelty prank golf ball does not pass. Golf bags are functional objects that golfers know intimately — if it does not have a specific use and a specific home in the bag, it will not stay.

Gets Used: Gloves

A 3-pack of cabretta gloves is used within 3 rounds — sometimes within 1. Golfers go through gloves faster than they buy them, meaning they are always playing with a glove slightly past its prime. A fresh 3-pack lands immediately and earns goodwill every time the next one comes out of the packaging.

Gets Used: Towels

A quality clip-on microfiber towel hangs on the bag for every round of the season. It removes mud from club faces, cleans ball covers before putts, and dries grips in light rain. A towel that clips well stays in rotation for 2–3 seasons. One of the longest-lasting golf gifts per dollar spent.

Gets Used: Milled Ball Markers

A milled ball marker set sits on a keychain or in the pocket for every round. Unlike plastic markers, a heavy milled marker gets noticed by every playing partner and gets commented on. Golfers who have one use it every round and would not go back. The gift most golfers want and most would not buy for themselves.

Gets Re-Gifted: Novelty Balls

Three-pack of exploding golf balls. Three-pack of extra-long tees with a joke on the packaging. Oversized marshmallow balls for backyard putting. These get used once for a laugh and then re-gifted to the next person on the list who golfs. Not a compliment to the recipient.

Gets Re-Gifted: Generic Branded Apparel

A polo shirt with a course logo or a generic brand the recipient does not wear is the classic re-gift. Golf apparel requires knowing the brand, the fit, and the style — three things most gift-givers do not know. Stick to accessories and consumables where fit does not matter.

The Formula

Useful every round + no sizing or handicap knowledge required + something he would not buy himself = the formula for a golf gift that actually gets used. A towel, markers, a glove set, alignment sticks, or a GPS watch all satisfy the formula. A novelty putting cup with cartoon graphics does not.
