Golf Ball Guide: What Actually Matters for Weekend Golfers
What to look for in a golf ball — compression, cover type, spin rate, and which categories actually matter for 90-shooter vs a 15-handicap vs a scratch player.

Compression and Swing Speed
Low compression balls (70–80) compress easier and benefit slower swing speeds (under 85 mph). High compression balls (90+) suit faster swings. Most weekend golfers benefit from mid-compression balls — the category marketed as "distance" at retail.
Cover Type: Surlyn vs Urethane
Surlyn covers are durable and produce less spin — great for distance and durability around the bag. Urethane covers grip the clubface and create more spin — essential for greenside control. Most tour balls use urethane. Most value balls use Surlyn.
The Real Rule for Amateurs
Play the ball you can afford to lose. A weekend golfer who loses 4 balls a round is better served by a 2-piece Surlyn ball at $25/dozen than a premium tour ball at $55/dozen.
